Tangled Lives

Fear and Hope
(before an Examination)

The words blur before my eyes,
My brain just can't think,
I'm afraid the mast will go down,
And the ship will just sink.
The ocean waves lap the shore,
Of freedom that is so far away.
I'll sail and row, until I can't sail any more,
Battle against doubt and surprise,
Persevere and pray,
Until I reach freedom's day.

The Beach

Our feet are walking through the sand
Waves crashing, please hold my hand
Life's a peach
We're at the beach
Our vacation went exactly as planned

- Jennifer Fisher

Springtime

It starts to rain really loud
Soaking all the dirt in the ground
Wetting the seeds
Fulfilling all the needs
Now flowers are growing all around

- Jennifer Fisher

Snowman

When winter comes with lots of snow
My friend the snowman begins to grow
He laughs and sings
What joy he brings
When he melts away, the tears will flow

- Jennifer Fisher

Sun Rise

Sun, sun, sun
Rise up from the clouds
Spread your rays
Flowers will be happy
Birds will sing
And I shall be happy and can sing, too.

The Lion

I am the one and only king
Of everything that I see.
Nothing on foot or wing
Can run away from me.
But the trees echo the hate
Of creatures all around.
I live in the iciness of fate,
In the cruelty of light and sound.

I was born to be the lord,
To make my subjects my prey.
No one can question me, except God,
I live in freedom everyday.
I eat to satisfy my hunger,
But I am plagued with guilt.
Nothing can move me, not anger,
But the hearts of fear that I have built.

You look at me with dread,
You live your life in fear.
As well you might, for where I tread,
There's death, far and near.
Have you ever tried
To learn why I kill?
Why that deer had died,
Why I need my fill?

Wasted is my mighty power,
If I can't rule you well.
The ravenous wolf and the frail flower
Dare not come near where I dwell.
I want to teach you to be wise,
To be good and strong.
But my instincts turn these into lies,
My instincts lead me along.

How horrible it is not to see
Without being blinded by greed.
I hate the way nature has made me,
But my appetite I must feed.
I love all creatures of the sea and land,
Queer, but truth is always strange.
Hopeless and dejected I stand,
Knowing that I can never change.

Nature's Cry

As I look at the sun,
I see heaven's glory and oh such fun!

I see trees for miles,valleys wide.
As they stare back at me, I stand with great pride.

I hope in the future my children will see,
all these beautiful things and remember me.

Before I die, I must have a chance,
to see this again,to have one last glance.

For if I don't I might forget,
all these wonerful things that I have met.

In your future, I beg of you please!
Don't ruin these valleys and glorious trees.

If you do let these valleys die,
I'll be sitting in heaven listening to Mother Nature cry.

- Averi, age 9

I Can

I can ...
Clean up my room.
Can you?

I can...
Draw a picture.
Can you?

I can...
Write a letter.
Can you?

I can...
Read a book.
Can you?

I can...
Swim in deep water.
Can you?

I can...
Ice skate.
Can you?

I can...
Ride a bike.
Can you?

What can you do?

Garden

Flowers are given shelter
buds are given blooms
Can oh dear! you guess
which is that place?

Honey-bees make home
Butterflies go and come
Can oh dear! you guess
which is that place?

Everyone goes for walking
Exercise done in the morning
Can oh dear! you guess
which is that place?

Long beautiful grasses
Evergreen high trees
Ya! It is the nice place
A beautiful garden.

Beyond The Horizon

When the cold mists unfold
Over the deserted plain;
When the roaring sea
Can drive one insane;
Even when the treacherous swamp
Chills one’s very soul;
And even as the thundering volcano
Throws out embers of burning coal;
I dream of life beyond the horizon.
I dream of a world of mystery,
Of suspense and tragedy,
Of warmth and kindness,
Of reality and comedy.
I’ve sailed the seven seas
And climbed the highest mountains,
I’ve crossed the seven continents
And caught a glimpse of the world’s largest fountains
And yet…
I dream of life beyond the horizon.
The earth holds many secrets
And this is another one;
Yet the secret of the horizon tops them all
For it’s greater than the secret of the rising sun.
I dream of a world of mystery
Of suspense and tragedy;
Of warmth and kindness,
Of reality and comedy…
Beyond the horizon.

School

what a safe place to go to,
with lots of things for you to do,
some people like to learn a lot,
but some people do not,
school is not so bad i say,
you get to eat,
and you get to play,
Don't be rude,
Don't be bad,
and you will have the best days you've ever had,
You will make friends,
for that i can be sure,
so don't go worrying about anything at all,
If you be friendly,
and you be kind,
you will make friends from time to time.
school is a good place to explore,
and it is sometimes an adventure for all,
so when you go to school,
don't be afraid,
just make your way up grade by grade

The Sun and Moonlight Dance!

Once upon a moonlight night,
As I sat upon the dancing shore,
I closed my eyes and this is what I dreamed,
I dreamed the sun and moon are dancing,
The wind is blowing towards the ocean wreck,
And you can hear the waves going "swsh swsh swsh",
I dream the sun and moon are setting in the night before the morning rise,
And I dream the sun gave the moon a kiss,
But before they left each other,
They both turned around and said,
WAIT!!!! then the moon said after you,
{sun} before you go I want to give you something,
{moon} before you go I want to give you something to,
So they counted...1,2,3, they both thurn around and say,
Here these are for you!!
And guess what,
What the sun gave the moon was crisp daisies,
And the moon gave the sun frozen roses,

So next time remember who you are,
and the present that you give someone else!

I open my eyes and I hear my mom calling me,
EMILY........time for bed,

Well I guess I learned my lesson,
never stay out to late or you'll miss you're favorite show!

- Aisha, age 10

A Friend Is...

A friend is someone to lean on
when you are feeling blue,
or someone who really cares for you.

A friend is someone who will stick by your side,
and their mom doesn't mind giving you a ride.

A friend is someone who knows the real you
and you don't mind telling your secrets to.

Most of all, a real friend is a friend
who is with you till the end.

~~~~My Brother~~~
As I sit here lonely and cold,
I wonder what I should've told
The boys that killed my brother.
The tears roll endlessly
tearing my soul and killing my mind.
I cry tears that kill
every drop seems to have a chill.
They are tears that make you wanna die
tears that make you wonder why.
All this just took one shot
All it took was just one move
That's all it took to kill my brother.
That's all it took for us to loose each other.
Tears drop from my eyes
tears that shed like stabbing knives.
Tears that never seem to die.
I can still hear his plead in my head.
His plead just to live.
As I sat there in the alley
hiding behind the garbage cans,
I relized how much I loved him
and that he must win.
I can still remember his cry
the cry of death
the cry that makes you wanna die.
It was cold and chilling
and now I am willing to take the blame
for my brothers murder.
Because I sat there and watched.
Family
Family is a wonderful thing to have
I'm lucky to have a big family.
I have twenty-two cousins and a lot of aunts and uncles.
I see my family a lot.
I love them coming over and I love going over there.
My and my family are very close,
Closer than most families.
I love spending time with them.
We go to the park, the movies, and the mall.
I always seem to see them at least once a week.
We have been together through sad and happy times.
That's why I love being with my family.
Life On Other Planets
Is there life on other planets
In this galaxy?
There might be ceptillions of worlds
That we could see;
Cities, skyscrapers,
Museums and cafes,
Who knows what lies
Beyond the Milky Way?
Do they surf ocean waves
On Neptune?
And do they fish for trout
On the Moon?
If I went to a star,
No matter how small,
Could I still
Go to the mall?
On other worlds,
People might have two heads,
And instead of ears
Have antennae instead;
They might look like goats,
Frogs, or monkeys,
Or be a species of fish,
Amoebas or fleas.
Whatever they look like,
There's no need to fuss,
Because deep in their hearts,
They're just like us;
They care for their kids,
Want to have fun,
Take time to relax,
And bask in the sun.
So, next time you see a UFO,
Better check things out,
Because it might be a friend,
Who's off his route;
When you look at the sky
On a clear, summer day,
If you see a spacecraft,
You might want to wave.
- Joel Bjorling
Fly
When I look up at the birds,
I wish I could fly,
To soar among the clouds
As the earth passes by.
I want to feel
My feet in the air,
Dangling, kicking
As the wind blows my hair.
I want to hide in the clouds
So no one will see;
It'd get me out of classes
Like geometry.
If I could fly,
I'd go up ten thousand feet,
I never knew the Eiffel Tower
Could be so petite!
The birds have it made,
They're real lucky guys
Because I need a Boeing 707 or the Concord
To master the skies.
- Joel Bjorling
In Just A Moment
(for Alyssa)
In just a moment,
You were gone,
No time to say good-bye,
But I must carry on;
In only a moment,
The sky turned gray--
Somebody tell me--
Must I face another day?
The blink of an eye
Can change things so,
One minunte you're at play,
But then you must go;
There is no answer
Under the moon,
Only to say
That you've gone too soon.
I can't forget your voice
Or your sweet face;
Your memory is something
That time can't erase;
As the years pass by,
From mile to mile,
When I hear your name,
I'll always smile.
- Joel Bjorling
Tattle Tale
He hit me,
He kicked me,
She got out of line.
He punched me,
He butted me,
That yellow pencil's mine.
They were playing in the bathroom,
She was running down the hall,
He called me a nasty name,
They were writing on the wall.
Who me?
Oh, no.
I was standing here
Being good.
I was listening to
The teacher,
Just like I know I should.
I guess I accidentally
Bumped him
Up against the wall,
And maybe that yellow pencil
Isn't mine at all.
Just one more chance dear teacher,
I know I can do better.
Just one more chance dear teacher,
Don't write my mom a letter!
- Margaret Woodall, adult
Late to School
I'm late because
The baby cried.
I'm late because
My pet frog died.
I'm late because
My cat left town.
I'm late because
My goldfish drowned.
I'm late because
The road was blocked
By an alligator
Eating a rock.
What do you mean
I overslept?
That's the dumbest excuse
I've ever heard yet.
- Margaret Woodall, adult
Lemonade Stand
I thought I'd be rich.
I had a great plan.
And I built the most wonderful
Lemonade stand.
And I made this big sign reading
LEMONADE SALE,
TEN CENTS A CUP
Or A QUARTER A PAIL.
Then I stood right out front
With a cup in each hand
Saying, "Try a cup sir,
Or try a cup ma'am."
Then I said to the people
"It's cold and it's fun!"
But no one did stop,
Not one single one.
And as folks just kept passing
My lemonade stand,
I received some strange looks
I could not understand.
Then as it started to snow
I thought, "What a bummer."
Maybe next time
I will try in the summer.
